As part of a major upgrade of Antwerp City Park, BestBridges developed a new timber boardwalk and terrace concept for this historic urban environment. Delivered in collaboration with contractor Lareco Infra, the project introduces a refined and highly accessible element to the public space.
The carefully designed boardwalks and stepped seating and viewing platforms allow residents and visitors to experience the park in an entirely new way, with particular attention given to the relationship with the central pond and the enhancement of the overall spatial experience.
With a total surface area of approximately 584 m², the entire structure was constructed from FSC® certified Azobé hardwood, a tropical timber with a D70 strength classification renowned for its exceptional durability, high structural strength, and natural resistance to weathering.
To guarantee a safe walking experience in all weather conditions, the deck boards were equipped with two integrated anti-slip strips per plank. Furthermore, the structure was meticulously detailed with specific technical solutions that enhance user comfort and simplify long-term maintenance.
The design also incorporates a protective timber edge along the entire perimeter and includes a section fitted with a robust steel balustrade, ensuring maximum safety for park visitors.
The primary supporting structure is exceptionally robust and was engineered with an Azobé hardwood substructure. This optimized configuration guarantees outstanding structural reliability and provides a service life of several decades for the timber construction components.
Various types of wooden balustrades are available, made of tropical hardwood such as Azobé or Bilinga. These balustrades offer great architectural freedom, allowing them to be perfectly adapted to the bridge’s design. The balustrades are easily dismountable, ensuring easy long-term maintenance without affecting the integrity of the bridge.
