A2 sa

For A2 sa, BestBridges is carrying out the renovation of an old traffic bridge in Le Rœulx. Instead of completely replacing the bridge, the existing structure is being widened and reinforced. The old bridge deck is being replaced with a new lightweight composite deck, designed to handle heavy traffic up to 60 metric tons.

Thanks to the composite deck’s low weight, there is virtually no additional load on the existing abutments. This gives the bridge a new lease on life as a cost-effective alternative to building a new bridge.

A New Deck on a Sound Existing Structure

The new bridge deck is made of fiberglass-reinforced composite featuring the patented InfraCore® Inside technology. Composite does not rust, does not rot, and requires virtually no maintenance: no coating, no preservation, just periodic inspection and cleaning. Thanks to its low weight, the existing substructure remains usable, while the bridge is ready to handle heavy traffic. The deck is fully prefabricated, ensuring quick installation with minimal disruption at the construction site.

With an expected service life of 100 years or more, the focus is not on the lowest purchase price, but on the total life-cycle cost. Thus, this project demonstrates the renovation approach of BestBridges LAB in practice: inspect, recalculate, reinforce, widen, upgrade, and extend the service life. It serves as a strong reference for the many smaller, aging bridges in Belgium and France where renovation is a viable alternative to complete replacement.
